Day 1 Summary
Module 1: Introduction to Drinking Water Quality
Overview of the water cycle and drinking water sources, the risk-based regulatory framework and role of the Drinking Water Inspectorate, and Water Safety Planning as a source-to-tap preventative approach.
Module 2: Wholesomeness and Contaminants of Concern
Definition of wholesome water and the Prescribed Concentrations or Values in the Water Quality Regulations (Schedule 1), covering microbiological, physical, inorganic and organic parameters, their indicators and health implications, including disinfection by-products and emerging contaminants such as PFAS and microplastics.
Module 3: Sources of Drinking Water
Overview of surface water, groundwater and alternative water sources, including source protection, treatment processes and sustainable water resource management practices.
Module 4: Treatment and Supply
Principles of treatment from clarification and filtration through to disinfection, with CT and UV dose metrics, and the distribution asset vulnerabilities that can compromise treated water quality.
Day 2 Summary
Module 5: Water Quality Regulations
Review of drinking water legislation, regulatory requirements, risk assessment approaches and Drinking Water Safety Plans, with a focus on maintaining public health and compliance.
Module 6: Water Quality Monitoring
Principles of operational and compliance monitoring, including monitoring strategies, risk-based approaches, online instrumentation and the use of monitoring data to support decision-making.
Module 7: Water Quality Sampling and Analysis
Best practice approaches to sampling, covering sample collection methods, contamination prevention, sample handling, frequency determination and sampler competency requirements, together with the analytical methods used for microbiological, physical and chemical parameters.
Day 3 Summary
Module 8: Water Quality Reporting
Reporting requirements for drinking water supplies, including compliance reporting, investigation of failures, water quality events, risk assessments and regulatory enforcement.
Module 9: Mitigating Actions
Selection and implementation of short- and long-term interventions in response to water quality failures, including operational measures, asset improvements and data-driven decision-making.
Module 10: Customer Complaints
Effective investigation and management of customer contacts and complaints, including communication techniques, complaint triage, escalation procedures and support for vulnerable customers.
