Course details

This training course enables utility & regulatory industry professionals to take their spreadsheet data analysis to the next level, with an accessible and practical introduction to R: the widely-used, free open-source programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics.

Duration: 1 day

Delivery: Online (self-paced)

Please allow 2 working days for your account details to be processed and emailed. Your details will be sent by an external online learning provider, Digital Chalk.

Course overview

Organisations are increasingly using data-driven approaches to manage assets, optimise processes and improve environmental outcomes. Whilst spreadsheets are well-suited to analysing small datasets with simple statistical tools, more specialised software is required to explore, visualise and make sense of more complex data.

This course allows for the upskilling of analysts to work more efficiently, accurately and transparently in a widely-used package which is free, open-source, flexible and powerful. While new users with little programming experience may find R to be a steep learning curve with a not-so-helpful 'Help' system, this course has been specifically designed to give industry professionals an accessible and hands-on introduction to the software. By the end of the training, delegates will be able to:

  • Undertake and manage analyses in R using the RStudio® integrated development environment
  • Import data from offline and online sources, and export results and graphics in a variety of formats
  • Efficiently manipulate, check and clean source datasets
  • Summarise data using a range of descriptive statistics, and produce engaging, professional quality charts and graphics
  • Fit and interpret simple statistical models
  • Engage in continuous self-learning via the online R community

Who can benefit?

Participants may be drawn from any area of business or service which may currently rely on spreadsheets for day-to-day analysis of datasets and are looking to take their analyses to the next level. For example, scientists and engineers in utility and regulatory organisations, including those who do not have prior coding or statistical knowledge, looking for an accessible and hands-on introduction to the data analysis package R.

Training outline

Flexible course delivery via our online leaning platform allows delegates to complete modules at their own pace. Through 11 digestible tutorials and 6 interactive practical exercises, learners will be armed with a toolbox of knowledge and skills which can be applied to their day-to-day roles. Modules include:
